Coming one day - a new album:
Layers - by Phase Slip.
This is a demo of a piece called Clouds End from the forthcoming album “Layers”.
Layers will be an album of extended atmospheric pieces. This is a demo of “Clouds End” which at a bit over 12 minutes is the shortest piece on the album.
The original idea for this piece came from a late afternoon into evening flight from Cairns to Melbourne, seeing a sea of smooth cloud below the ‘plane stretching to the horizon where it just seemed meld into the blue sky above. It was impossible to tell where the cloud ended and the sky began and it reminded me of an experiment I’d seen demonstrated at uni where a vial of clear liquid and gas were heated. As the temperature and pressure rose inside the vial the phase boundary between the liquid and gas states seemed to vanish.
As the journey continued, daylight turning to dusk and then to darkness, the boundary between cloud and sky - the “cloud’s end” - became even more blurred.
That was the starting point for this piece of music, but it has evolved beyond that - and this is still in demo form. I hope one day soon to polish and finish it along with “Layers” and “String Theory”, the other two pieces for the album which are also still works in progress.
